James Scott, MD, FACEP is dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) at The George Washington University (GWU), a position he has held since August 2004. Dr. Scott previously served as interim dean and associate dean of SMHS and assumed all the academic and administrative responsibilities of dean in 2003.
Dr. Scott became a full professor in the department of Emergency Medicine at GWU in 1998. Previously, he served as residency director, assistant dean for Graduate Medical Education, and assistant dean for Student Affairs in SMHS.
He was named the outstanding clinical teacher by the School of Medicine’s Class of 2003, and he has received the Golden Apple award for outstanding teaching 10 times since coming to GW in 1986. In 1997, he was selected by a faculty and student committee to receive The George Washington University Distinguished Teaching Award.
In addition, Dr. Scott received a National Teaching Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians in 1998.
Dr. Scott received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1977 followed by serving two years in the Peace Corps. He received his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1983. Dr. Scott completed his internal medicine internship at the University of Arizona and did his emergency medicine residency at Georgetown University and The George Washington University.
