Research Award Opportunities

The Cheney Cardiovascular Institute proudly accepts applications for cardiovascular research grants. Cardiovascular research is a critical focus of the Institute and these grants afford opportunities for interdisciplinary research open to faculty and fellows throughout The George Washington University campus.

Program Descriptions

The Cheney Cardiovascular Institute periodically awards grants for two types of research initiatives.

Faculty Awards – Faculty awards afford the faculty of The George Washington University, Medical Center and Medical Faculty Associates the opportunity to undertake research activities that have application for clinical cardiovascular care.  Grants will be awarded up to $75,000 for one year. Applicants must include a GW Foggy Bottom clinical cardiovascular co-investigator. Preference will be given to applications that:

  • Support or supplement research initiatives of the Institute – Featured Research Programs.
  • Are translational in nature.

Fellowship/Trainee Awards – GW residents, cardiology fellows, and fellows from other clinical subspecialty training programs are eligible for these grants, as long as the proposed research project falls within the scope of the Institute’s mission. Applicants may request up to $25,000 for one year. Applicants must include a mentor from the GW Foggy Bottom faculty. Preference will be given to applications that:

  • Support or supplement research initiatives of the Institute – Featured Research Programs.
  • Are translational in nature.
  • Include a GW Foggy Bottom clinical cardiovascular co-investigator.

 

Eligibility

Faculty Awards – Applicants eligible for the Faculty Awards are any physician or scientist presently serving as faculty or a clinician at The George Washington University Foggy Bottom campus.

Fellowship/Trainee Awards – Applicants eligible for the award are any physician or scientist presently in a residency or a fellowship program at The George Washington University Foggy Bottom campus.

 

Selection Process

Applications for Faculty and Fellowship/Trainee Awards will be evaluated by the Institute’s Research Committee and selected outside professionals serving as grant reviewers.  Criteria for selection include, but are not limited to:

  • Is the proposal hypothesis driven?
  • Will project advance the field?
  • Is the study innovative?
  • Consistent with the Institute’s mission?
  • Is the methodology sound?
  • Is the analytic plan appropriate?
  • Do the qualifications of the investigator(s) appropriate for the study?   (And mentor for trainee applications.)
  • Is there complementary and integrated expertise of collaborators?
  • Is there an appropriate and supportive environment?

 

Application Procedure & Deadlines

Applicants for grant awards must complete an application.  Proposals will be no longer than 10 pages in length (plus references) and will include: hypothesis; specific aims; background; preliminary data; methods; significance; qualifications of personnel; research site and adequacy of space/equipment; budget and justification.  The anticipated number of awards will depend upon the quality of the applications received.
