The George Washington University

As an institute of The George Washington University (GW), the Cheney Cardiovascular Institute has great access to outstanding resources and expertise. Located four blocks from the White House, GW was created by an Act of Congress in 1821.

Today, GW is the largest institution of higher education in the nation's capital. The University offers comprehensive programs of undergraduate and graduate liberal arts study as well as degree programs in medicine, public health, law, engineering, education, business and international affairs. Each year, GW enrolls a diverse population of undergraduate, graduate and professional students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 120 countries.

The George Washington University Medical Center

Being aligned with The George Washington University Medical Center (GWUMC), the Cheney Cardiovascular Institute reaps the benefits of a leading academic health care center and leverages expertise from a multiple of departments, particularly the GW McCormick Genomics Center and the School of Public Health and Health Services.

Founded in 1824, GWUMC is an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary academic health care center comprising the School of Medicine and Health Sciences; School of Public Health and Health Services; GW Hospital, which is jointly operated by Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS); and GW Medical Faculty Associates, Inc. (MFA) which includes both the primary care and specialty practices of the medical faculty. GWUMC also has a longstanding tradition in research, with about 400 research projects currently underway.

Also aligned with the Cheney Cardiovascular Institute, the Medical School and Medical Faculty Associates is The George Washington University Hospital. Founded in 1824, the hospital is nationally recognized for medical excellence and innovation. As a multi-disciplinary, tertiary care hospital, The George Washington University Hospital offers many diverse services all in one central location. The hospital is staffed by nearly 900 physicians representing more than 30 specialty and subspecialty fields. Centers of emphasis include: Cardiovascular Disease, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Emergency Medicine, Cancer Treatment, Minimally Invasive Surgery and Women’s Health.
